The annual ice hockey tournament known as the Ice Hockey World Championship is organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The First Hockey World Championship actually took place during the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, formally referred to as the Games of the VII Olympiad. And ever since then, hockey world championship tickets have been some of the most sought-after tickets in hockey, since the IIHF World Championship is hockey’s highest profile annual international tournament. The IIHF was created in 1908, however there was no separate Hockey World Championship at the time. The Olympic hockey tournament was the official world championship from 1920 though 1968.

From 1931 all the way through 1992, Hockey World Championship tickets would have gotten you in to see a series of round-robin qualifying rounds that would decide what counties got to compete for the title. It wasn’t until 1990 that the IIHF would institute a playoff system to decide the winner. As Hockey World Championship continued to grow in popularity during the 1980s and 1990′s so more divisions had to be added to the tournament. And with more teams come more fans that want Hockey World Championship tickets for the event.

The current IIHF Hockey World Championship Tournament sees 16 nations compete in the Championship Round, which eventually declares a winner. However, prior to the Championship Round, the teams are split into two Divisions, I and II. Once the Championship Round is determined, the teams play a preliminary round followed by a qualifying round, with the top eight teams competing the medal round. After all that the IIHF World Champion is crowned. That is quite a few games you’ll see if you buy Hockey World Championship tickets!

Since 1977, anyone who wants to play bad enough has the chance, as the Hockey World Championship has been open to all players, regardless of whether they are professional and amateur. But if you try out and don’t make, you can still get hockey world championship tickets and watch the action in person. However, the athletes need to be citizens of the country they are playing for, not a requirement if you want to watch!

Between 1930 and 1952, Canada was a dominant team in the early days of the IIHF Hockey Tournament, as they won the tournament 12 times between 1930 and 1952. But once the Soviet Union got involved, they started to compete at the highest level, rivaling Canada and the rest of the field. They would go on to win the Hockey World Championship a stunning 20 times from 1963 through the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. You can bet all the Soviets with Hockey World Championship tickets enjoyed that run! During the 2009 Hockey World Championship, Russia repeated as champs during the event, held in Zurich and Berne, Switzerland. The 74th Hockey World Championship takes place in 2010 in Germany, with 48 nations competing for a chance at the title.
